Saturday 15 August 2015 Coffs Harbour Offshore Superboat Shootout |
It is Saturday 15 August and the start of the weekend for round 4 of the Australian Offshore Superboats Championship where the boats compete at speeds in excess of 200 kph over a course that takes in both the sheltered waters of the 'outer harbour' and the adjacent ocean waters.

A growing number of spectators gathered in the dry pit area as the boats were lifted by crane from their trailer cradles to the waters of the International Marina for engine checks and preparations for the afternoon's Shoot Out round prior to tomorrow's round 4 Championship heats.
Coffs Harbour has hosted a round of the annual championship for the previous 2 years and is earmarked to continue to host a round of the "Offshore Superboats" for the next couple of years.
The crews say that Coffs Harbour offers some of the best water conditions for their high speed racing and they are always keen to be here. A rumor is gathering strength that one of the teams may actually be looking at establishing a base operation here in Coffs. It is suggested the team could be looking at Coffs Harbour as an operations base because of its strategic location and good access to rail and air transport.
Today the ocean conditions were relatively calm encouraging the Superboat crews to push their boats across the swell at a good speed and we witnessed some extreme 'air' as the boats launched themselves of the top off the very small swell.
Tomorrow, Sunday 16 August, with only two more rounds after this weekend we will see the teams stretch the capacity of their powerful crafts close to their limits as they fight for points and placings in the championship.
I hope to see you tomorrow for the 'battle of the fastest' of this spectacular event.
Next month we (Coffs Harbour) will be hosting round 10 of the World Rally Championship from 11 Sept to 13 Sept.
